A 50th is the milestone people actually celebrate: the party is bigger than the 40th, the guest list reaches back to school, and the invitation is often the first time cousins and colleagues hear each other's names. It can be as formal as a wedding or as light as a pub booking. Here are sixteen to copy, formal and funny, in a register that reads right in Britain.
What a 50th birthday invitation needs
- Whose 50th, and if the party is not on the day, the real date.
- Who is inviting. The birthday person, or the partner and children for a surprise or a formal do.
- Date, start time and finish. For a venue, the licence; for a dinner, the sitting.
- Where, with a postcode. If people are travelling, where to stay.
- Food and drink. A sit-down dinner, a buffet, drinks and canapés, a bar or a tab.
- Dress code. "Smart", "cocktail", "black tie optional", "come as you were in 1977".
- Gifts. "No gifts" or "a contribution to" something; at 50 most people mean it.
- Partners. Whether invitations are for the named guest or for two.
- The reply, with a date.

No gifts, please. Your company is the present. If you would like to mark it, a donation to the Chiltern Air Ambulance would mean a great deal.

Things to get right
- Partners. At 50 most guests have one, and most hosts want them there. Say "and partner" or address the invitation to both, and give the reply form room for two names.
- Two generations. Parents in their 70s and children in their teens are both coming. Say the timings so the elderly can come for dinner and leave before the band.
- Gifts. "No gifts" works at 50 if you give an alternative: a charity, a bottle for the bar, a contribution to a trip.
- The speech. If there is one, say roughly when, so smokers and parents of small children are in the room.
- Dietary needs. A sit-down dinner means a caterer and a list. Ask on the reply form, not by text afterwards.
Where the words go
A 50th with a dinner, a seating plan and guests travelling is easiest from one page: the invitation, the timings, the venue and a map, where to stay, the gift line and a reply form that takes names, dietary needs and who to sit with. One link to everyone, and the replies come back to you in a list the caterer can use. Our birthday invitation page shows the designs that suit a milestone, and one payment of £40 covers any number of guests. A silver or golden wedding uses the same page with the story and the photographs added; see anniversary invitations.
From the makers
