Why a wedding abroad needs more than a card
A card says where and when. A wedding in Italy, Spain, Greece or Portugal also has to say which airport, how to get from it to the villa, which hotels have rooms held and until when, what happens on the Friday and the Sunday, what to wear on a terrace in June, and when you need to know numbers, because you are paying the caterer in another currency three months out. That is a website, not a card, and it needs to work on a phone in a departure lounge.
What goes on a destination wedding website
- The weekend, day by day. Welcome drinks, the wedding, the farewell lunch, each with its time, its place and its dress note, so guests can book flights around it.
- Getting there. The airports, the transfer times, the train and the ferry, and a line about the shuttle you will run.
- Where to stay. The hotels you have held rooms at, the rate, the date the hold ends, and what to say when they book.
- The venue with a map, and a second map for the hotel if guests will be moving between them.
- The reply form, early. Ask who is coming, for which days, any dietary needs, and when they land, so the shuttle list writes itself.
- Money and practicalities. Currency, the taxi rank, the pharmacy, the dress code for the heat, the number of a local contact.
- Children and plus-ones, stated plainly, because a flight makes the question sharper.
The destination wedding invitation wording guide has the lines for the invitation, the save the date and the travel notes.
Lago, the design made for it
Lago opens with a bright film of the lake filling the first screen, your names over the water. Then linen, lake blue and a sand hairline, with the weekend of events, the travel and the hotels as sections of their own rather than footnotes. Switch in your own film of the place if you have one, or a photograph. The same details move to any other design without retyping, so if the Amalfi coast becomes the Cotswolds, nothing is lost.
Replies that tell you who lands when
The reply form asks for a yes or no and a meal choice per person, and you add your own questions: "Which days will you join us?" with the three days as tick boxes, "Which hotel have you booked?", "What time do you land?". Every household can have its own link with their names on it and a note about the room you have held for them. You see who has replied and who has not, and the export has the days and the landing times on it for the shuttle and the caterer.
Send it by WhatsApp, and send the save the date first
A destination wedding needs a save the date six to nine months out and the invitation four to five months out. Both can be the same link: publish the page with the dates, the place and the hotels, and add the reply form and the programme later. Guests who saved the date open the same link again and reply. Our guide to sending wedding invitations by WhatsApp covers the message and the group.
When the replies should be due
Earlier than a wedding at home. Hotels release held rooms, the caterer wants numbers in their currency, and guests need to book flights while they are cheap. Eight to ten weeks before the day is usual; the RSVP deadline guide has the sums.
What it costs
£40 one-off, VAT included, for any number of guests, live for a year. That is the launch offer; the usual price is £59. Nothing to pay until you send it. Guests abroad pay nothing and need no app.
Good questions
- Can guests reply from abroad without an account?
- Yes. They open the link from a message and reply from their phone, wherever they are. Nothing to install and nothing to sign up for.
- Can we ask which days each guest is coming for?
- Yes. Add "Which days will you join us?" as a question with the days as tick boxes. The answers come through with every reply and in the export.
- Can the page show the time in the wedding’s time zone?
- Yes. Set the time zone of the wedding under the date, and the countdown and the times follow it.
- Can we add a shuttle timetable later?
- Yes. Edit the travel section any time; guests see the change the next time they open the link. Many couples publish the hotels first and the timetable a month before.
- Can we use our own film of the place?
- Yes. Upload a short clip of up to 30 seconds and it plays on the cover; or keep the lake film that comes with Lago.
